News in Brief
Two rare 1973 Rupert annuals featuring a brown-faced Rupert on the front cover were recently auctioned at Dukes of Dorchester (October 4th & 5th. 2007). Only a few 1973 annuals were printed with the brown-faced Rupert before the cover was changed to include a white-faced Rupert, a decision which enraged illustrator Alfred Bestall who refused to illustrate future annuals. The annuals were sold for £22,000 and £23,000 - significantly exceeding the estimates.

The Story of Rupert Bear
A character almost everyone is familiar with is Rupert Bear. Rupert is immensely collectable today and in particular the early annuals are very sought after. Although the first Rupert annual was published in 1936, Rupert Bear was actually created 16 years previously in 1920. His creator was Mary Tourtel, born in 1874 into a very artistic family and married in her early 20's to Herbert Tourtel who worked in printing and publishing...

Daily Express. 1932. Good condition with no wrapper. Pictorial boards. Front cover shows elephant's head. 7 pop-up models: The Old Woman In The Shoe, The Pagoda, The Flower Fairy, The Woodcutter, The Fair, Elephant Rides. Contains Rupert story "Rupert's Pet Monkey Gets Lost". Flower fairy pop-up has been neatly strengthened but all pop-ups are in good working order. Some hinges cracked. Some foxing to contents. Spine edges cracked with loss of surface paper at edges, looks as though spine has been reglued in the past. Corners worn. Name and address in ink to front cover.
